Chief Financial Officer

Salary Range: $140-180K annually

Location: Durham, NC. This is a full-time, in-person position based at Measurement Incorporated’s headquarters in Durham, NC.

Measurement Incorporated (MI) is an employee-owned corporation and a leading provider of customized educational assessment services. Since 1980, MI has supported state education departments, school districts, universities, nonprofit organizations, consortia, and foundations. We specialize in psychometric and assessment services, hand- and automated scoring services, and program evaluation and school improvement services. We are seeking a strategic, experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide leadership, oversight, and management of our financial operations, ensuring MI’s ongoing financial health and growth. The CFO will collaborate closely with executive leadership (C-Suite) and assist in the design and implementation of evolving corporate strategies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in strategic planning, risk management, and business development, with a strong commitment to ethical financial stewardship.

Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and auditing processes.

  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), IRS, ERISA, DOL, and applicable federal and state financial regulations.

  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, capital resources, and investment strategies.

  • Monitor financial performance by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances.

  • Design and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure integrity of financial reporting; coordinate with external and internal auditors.

Strategic Financial Planning

  • Develop and execute financial strategies supporting MI’s business objectives.

  • Evaluate and implement technology solutions to streamline financial operations and improve data visibility, accuracy, and decision-making capabilities.

  • Lead financial forecasting, risk assessment, and strategic planning activities.

  • Provide financial expertise in evaluating capital investment opportunities, including real estate and construction projects.

  • Develop organization prospects by studying economic trends and revenue opportunities; projecting acquisition and expansion prospects; analyzing operations; identifying opportunities for improvement, cost reduction, and systems enhancement.

  • Oversee enterprise risk management frameworks and internal controls to identify, mitigate, and monitor financial and operational risks across the organization.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Direct the preparation and timely distribution of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.

  • Ensure accurate financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, executive leadership, and regulatory agencies.

  • Partner with the Board of Directors to provide insight into the company’s financial strategy, risks, and performance.

  • Prepare board presentations and actively participate in governance discussions.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and support the finance, accounting, benefits, and payroll teams.

  • Mentor staff to promote accountability, professional growth, and adherence to ethical standards.

  • Foster a high-performing team culture through regular feedback and development opportunities.

  • Maintain professional expertise by staying current with regulatory changes and engaging in ongoing learning and industry networking.

Communication & Relationship Management

  • Serve as MI’s financial representative, building strong relationships with external partners, investors, auditors, and banks.

  • Clearly communicate complex financial information to diverse internal and external stakeholders.

  • Maximize return on invested funds by identifying investment opportunities and maintaining relationships with the investment community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.

  • CPA certification highly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in accounting and financial management practices, including at least 5 years in senior leadership. Will consider a first-time CFO depending on relevant experience.

  • Experience in education, professional services, construction, or real estate development industries strongly preferred.

  • Experience with nonprofit or public sector contracting and financial compliance preferred.

  • Extensive knowledge of financial management, data analysis, risk management, and forecasting.

  • Understanding of data privacy practices, including compliance with relevant regulations.

  • Proficiency with financial management software and MS Office Suite.

  • Experience with NetSuite and PayCor a plus.

  • Exceptional leadership, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong communication skills with high ethical standards and integrity.
